hyperpigmentation

THE CAUSES AND SOLUTIONS

Welcome to SKIN WELLNESS WITH GEORGIA, the aesthetician

Hyperpigmentation is a condition that is caused by the excess production of melanin.  It is characterized by darkened patches or spots on the skin, and may be influenced by exposure to UV light, hormonal changes, PIH (Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation), and/or acne.  PIH occurs after skin has been injured or irritated.

During the summer, it becomes critical that the skin is protected from the sun's UV light, because the production of melanin increases as the skin is exposed to the rays from the sun.  When the sun's rays hit the skin, the cells that produce melanin (melanocytes) are activated in order to protect you.  However, an over production of these cells can lead to hyperpigmentation.  So what does one do?

It does not matter if you are prone to post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, uneven skin tone, or melasma, the key is not to correct as much as it is to prevent.  Correction is important; however, prevention is the most important step.  This starts with protecting the skin from the influencers that may cause hyperpigmentation and then preserving that protection.

Recommended preventive steps:

1.  Broad-Spectrum SPF Every Day

We recommend you choose a broad-spectrum SPF 50 which has protection from UVA, UVB, infrared, and HEV (blue light).  Application:  every 2-3 hours if you are outside.  Don't forget to apply the SPF wherever skin is exposed (i.e., arms, hands, legs, ears, feet).  Our recommendation is Dermalogica Protection 50 Sport.

2.   Antioxidants

Vitamin C is a neutralizer against free radical damage.  It brightens skin tone, and boosts sunscreen performance.  Recommendation:  Dermalogica antioxidant hydramist, and the complete biolumin-c line.

3.  Choose non-aggressive skin treatments

Stay away from treatments that cause trauma or applies too much heat to the skin.  Focus on treatments that strengthen the skin without arousing melanocytes.  See our recommended skin treatments below.

4.  Wear protective clothing

Wide brim hats, sunglasses, cotton and/or linen tops that cover the arms and chest while allowing your skin to breath.  Wearing less clothing does not make you cooler.  Instead, it allows the rays from the sun to burn your skin resulting in skin cancer.
